Navigating the Future: Insights from Women in Cleantech & Sustainability’s Mentorship Program Virtual Kickoff
Written by Priyanka Bist
The Women in Cleantech & Sustainability (WCS) Mentorship Program has formally launched its 8th cohort in 2024. Aiming to support women in advancing their careers in the cleantech and sustainability sectors, this three-month, cohort-based program kicked off with 78 mentors and mentees embarking on a powerful and insightful celebration focused on envisioning a 5-year career trajectory.
The event opened with a strong emphasis on the significance of setting ambitious career goals without limitations. Encouraging participants to be open to taking chances and listening to diverse perspectives, the early career tips set the stage for a dynamic and empowering discussion. A pivotal theme emerged during the session – overcoming feelings of overwhelm and fear. The concept of “name it to tame it” resonated, highlighting the importance of acknowledging and addressing fears to diminish their impact. Participants were encouraged to periodically “check themselves” and find balance in the pursuit of their goals.
“Brave” Does Not Mean “Fearless”
A mantra echoed throughout the event emphasized that being brave doesn’t mean being fearless; it means pushing through fear and taking action. The importance of setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound) was covered, ensuring that aspirations align with a strategic plan for success. Janet Zavala, one of our first guest speakers, shared valuable insights about embracing a multi-passionate approach to one’s career. She encouraged participants to trust their intuition, not allowing fears to derail their dreams. Janet Zavala emphasized the significance of embracing strengths unapologetically, actively cultivating confidence, and building a supportive community.
Career Exploration is Healthy!
The event also delved into practical strategies for career exploration. Participants were advised to take courses and get certified, allowing them to explore their passions without jeopardizing their current positions. A powerful exercise on personal branding involved identifying adjectives aligning with participants’ visions, reflecting on authentic moments, and crafting compelling personal brand stories.
The insights shared during the Mentorship Program’s first event, coupled with practical strategies for overcoming challenges and building a resilient mindset, set a robust foundation for the transformative journey ahead. As participants navigate the next three months of mentorship, they carry with them the wisdom gained from this impactful kickoff event. The Women in Cleantech & Sustainability Mentorship Program is not just a professional development opportunity; it’s a collective journey toward fostering leadership, resilience, and empowerment in the cleantech and sustainability sectors.
Stay tuned for more updates as our mentors and mentees continue to shape the future of clean energy and sustainability. The journey has just begun, and the possibilities are boundless.
