Board Membership | William J Worthen Foundation Application

WJWF seeks Directors who have a passion for and commitment to advocacy and education to further our organization’s mission (especially related to climate change and climate justice through the built environment), are committed to increasing the sustainability of our built environment, and interested in supporting communities to be more resilient, self-reliant, and civically engaged. Candidates must be willing to commit time and attention to helping our organization serve our communities and stakeholders.

The Board seeks to ensure a diversity of lived experiences, backgrounds, perspectives and skills among the members of the Board. We are also looking to add enthusiastic professionals to the board, including those with specific experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to one or more of the areas below:

  • Sustainability in the built environment,

  • Nonprofit boards and/or nonprofit leadership,

  • Building community resilience,

  • Finance (e.g. fundraising, grant writing, accounting, etc.),

  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, willingness to engage, and/or demonstrated commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations for a nonprofit board (including WJWF projects and programs)

  • Willingness to work and play with others with humility, respect, and humor

Board members have the opportunity and duty to represent the WJWF in our community. They are vital to the organization as recruiters of sponsorships and other support, and will provide guidance and resources to the organization’s workgroups. Board members are also vital to our fundraising efforts: our expectation is that each board member will coordinate between $1,000 – $5,000 of donations annually, via corporate sponsorships, in-kind donations and/or outreach to donors in order to help fund the organization and our programs.

The elected term begins August 1, 2024, and will be staggered so that approximately one-third of the Board changes each year. Board meetings are typically held monthly (currently on the Second Tuesday, in the late afternoon). Successful candidates will also be asked to attend the Winter Social in December or January. Terms are typically three (3) years, and Board members can be considered for re-election for up to two (2) additional three-year terms.

Please note the following:

  • Self-nominations are encouraged. You may nominate yourself by completing the Nomination Form; or, you may ask someone to nominate you.

  • Board members shall commit to attending at least ten (10) of the twelve (12) monthly meetings each year.

  • Board members shall actively participate in at least one (1) committee / workgroup.

  • Board members shall annually donate a self-defined, personally significant financial contribution in addition to coordinating other financial support noted above.

The deadline to submit the Nomination Form is Thursday, May 16, 2024. Election results will be announced before the end of July.

Responses to this application will be the sole property of the William J Worthen Foundation, and may or may not be released to others at the Foundation Board’s sole discretion.

We strongly encourage all interested applicants to apply. We value a diversity of experience and are committed to finding ways to facilitate involvement of the broadest and most diverse candidate pool.
