The Power of Elevator Pitches

Written by Priyanka Bist

We’re excited to bring you an in-depth look at our recent WCS Mentorship Program session, a captivating exploration of “Negotiation Mindset & Networking.” Led by the dynamic Nadia De Ala, our guest speaker, this session delved into essential skills for professional growth.

Don’t Forget Your Elevator Pitch and Personal Brand

Nadia kicked off the session by emphasizing the significance of crafting an effective elevator pitch. Participants discussed the importance of having variations of their pitch tailored to different audiences, such as industry experts, clients, or colleagues. The elevator pitch, portrayed as a networking tool, serves as a concise introduction in settings where time is of the essence, such as conferences and events.

Personal branding took center stage as well, particularly in the context of interviews. Nadia stressed the importance of presenting oneself positively, purposefully, and truthfully. A crucial reminder echoed throughout the session – don’t forget to answer the interview question! In the pursuit of projecting a polished personal brand, participants were urged to avoid veering into memorized messages and stay specific and authentic.

Navigating the Landscape of Networking

The group also discussed the challenges and intricacies of networking. Participants unanimously acknowledged the critical role of networking in their professional lives. Among the challenges shared, follow-up emerged as a recurring theme. The discussion highlighted the need to sustain momentum after initial connections and the potential pitfalls of losing opportunities in the absence of timely follow-ups.

Attendees candidly shared their struggles, from grappling with questions about their previous field during a transition to clean energy to navigating the often awkward first moments of networking. However, a thread of overcoming challenges through finding commonalities emerged, emphasizing the power of shared interests and experiences in establishing meaningful connections.

Negotiation and Networking as Self-Advocacy

As the session unfolded, Nadia guided participants through the intricacies of being a real leader. Her emphasis on self-love, authenticity, values alignment, and self-advocacy set the stage for a deeper exploration of negotiation and networking as powerful forms of self-advocacy. The floor opened up for participants to reflect on their career and business goals, with Nadia encouraging them to rank their comfort levels in negotiation and networking on a scale from 1 to 4. A stark reality was unveiled – women are estimated to earn $400,000 less than men over a 40-year career, with a disproportionate impact on black, brown, and indigenous women. This underscores the urgent need for individuals, especially women and those from marginalized communities to empower themselves with skills and confidence to assert their value in professional settings.

Navigating Inner Challenges and Limiting Thoughts

Nadia encouraged participants to build awareness around their “inner haters” – the people pleaser, victim mindset, imposter syndrome, and toxic thoughts that can hinder professional growth. The conversation delved into limiting beliefs, with the reminder that taking chances can lead to both rejection and remarkable opportunities. As a cohort member put it, “Don’t reject yourself, let other people reject you.You never know what will happen if you don’t take the chance.”

Collective Commitment to Empowering Each Other

The session concluded with a collective commitment to consistently nurture networks, overcome challenges, and embrace the transformative power of negotiation and networking in our professional journey. As contributors to our communities, we recognize the unique value we bring, and the need to amplify our voices and impact.A heartfelt thank you to Nadia De Ala and the cohort for sharing their experiences and wisdom, on a continuous journey of self-improvement and empowerment!
