The Ad Hoc Group was founded by Jim Kapsis, a former climate negotiator in the Obama Administration and leader of the global regulatory team at Opower, Inc., an energy efficiency software company that sold to Oracle in 2016. Jim is also co-host of Technopolis, a podcast about how technology is disrupting, remaking, and sometimes overrunning our cities.

About the Position:

The SVP/VP will provide executive level support to our clients and work closely with the Founder to run and grow the business. They will serve as executive sponsor on client accounts, provide strategic direction to the account team, leverage their industry expertise and deep rolodex to advance client goals, and actively work to bring in new business to the firm. This is a great position for someone who has had a senior position at the intersection of business and policy at one or more successful startups, and is eager to help a portfolio of startups and other innovators scale businesses to address our most pressing climate and sustainability challenges.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build, maintain, and grow relationships with AHG’s clients who include startup founders, VC partners, and corporate innovation team leaders.

  • Provide executive level support to clients to help them understand how policy and regulation affect their market, and develop and execute a go-to-market strategy to help them win it.

  • Help manage more junior AHG team members and liaise closely with AHG’s advisors.

  • Build strong relationships with the startup ecosystem from VCs to startup founders to  government leaders whose decisions impact innovation.

  • Help grow the AHG business by converting industry relationships into clients.

  • Build the AHG brand through thought leadership on social media platforms and participation in industry events.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 10-20 years of experience in startups, consulting, utilities, and/or government with a premium on senior startup experience. Sales experience is also a big plus.

  • A track record of successful people management and culture building.

  • MBA, MPP, or related Masters preferred, but equivalent experience accepted

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with frequent context switching

  • Excellent client relationship management skills.

  • Executive-level written and oral communication skills

  • Deep expertise in one or more climate-related segments, such as building decarbonization, transportation electrification, renewable energy, climate resilience, carbon removal, et al.

  • Strong senior relationships in industry, such as in utilities, real estate, automotive OEMs, and in policy, such as in federal/state/local government and environmental/trade groups.

  • Conviction that a combination of business and policy innovation are required to address the most pressing climate and sustainability challenges of our time.

Location:  Flexible, but Washington, DC preferred. Approximately 20% travel.

Compensation and Benefits: Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
