Engagement Manager – Buildings
An ADL Engagement Manager typically has 5+ years of full-time work experience (but sometimes much more, accompanied by a hunger for new learning), and is expected to lead projects in buildings. A rich understanding of the leading-edge technology solutions in these spaces will help you better craft solutions for our clients and work towards launching new companies that fit a defined market niche. ADL’s buildings practice works heavily with federal and state government agencies, so understanding the intersection of public and private sectors activities is critical, in particular how we may work with government agencies such as DOE to accelerate demand and ease market acceptance for advanced building construction.
Operating experience in an innovative organization in the buildings industry is strongly preferred, including running projects with internal teams of 3-5 people (including Analysts / Associates as direct reports and Partners offering strategic direction and client management leadership) is critical. Versatility in interacting with and understanding of the major types of building industry stakeholders (demand, supply, enabler, R&D) ADL interacts with is essential. Of particular value is experience in how building owners work with finance and insurance players to effectively commission and deliver projects with emerging technologies. You will play a central role in creating new offerings or enhancing existing programs in those areas.
An ADL Engagement Manager in Buildings has an entrepreneur’s knack for driving business innovation, market assessment, scenario analysis, and strategic planning across the entire construction value chain.
Engagement Manager or Principal – Energy and Utilities
A rich understanding of the current state, language, trends, regulations, and leading-edge technology solutions in these spaces will help you better ideate and craft solutions for our clients and work towards launching new lines of business that fit a defined market niche.
While consulting experience is not necessary, experience leading projects with an internal team of 3-5 people (including associates as direct reports and Partners offering strategic direction and client management leadership) is important, even critical. ADL projects are fast-paced and require consistent progress on multiple investigative fronts in the face of shifting client priorities and needs.
An ADL Engagement Manager or Principal in Energy and Utilities has an entrepreneur’s knack for novel business model design, scenario planning, piloting/experimentation, and digitization – but is simultaneously able to apply sustained focus to create client-ready reports and slide decks on short notice.
Associate – Energy and Buildings Innovation
An ADL Associate, typically with 1-3 years of experience (including past internships), is expected to support projects in the energy, buildings and/or transportation sectors. An interest in and understanding of the leading-edge technology solutions in these spaces will help you better craft solutions for our clients and support teams in launching NewCos that fit a defined market niche.

(Note that ADL does not perform lab-based science or engineering work; those desiring to perform purely technical work will likely want to explore fellowships or internships in those specific fields.)
Project-based Consultants – Energy and Buildings Innovation
ADL has a number of project-based consultants and advisors that support us on projects. These individuals can work at the Associate level (2-4 years of experience), Engagement Manager (5-10 years of experience), or Principal (10+ years and/or relevant subject matter expertise). Analyst – Summer 2023 Internship
ADL is seeking an intern with an interest in bringing cutting-edge technologies to market utilizing a customer-driven, hands-on approach. Our work environment is collegial, friendly and fun, and the work we tackle on a daily basis is dynamic and ever-changing. The ADL internship experience is differentiated and unique in that interns often build rich commercialization and operating experience across a number of projects, as opposed to pursuing a single “deep dive” project for a spring or a semester. This affords interns higher-level conceptual and strategic learning across a diverse range of topics, and lends itself well to general management, professional services, and start-up careers. Recent ADL interns have been hired by industry-leading firms in management consulting, green buildings, biotech and government. We are located in Cambridge and have dedicated positions for MA residents and students which are sponsored by Mass CEC, but anticipate significant flexibility and remote work is likely in light of continued convenience, safety and social distancing considerations.
