Position Description: 

The mission of our System Performance team is to maximize the uptime of our customers’ Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal systems. By deploying a team of technicians with expertise in Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal systems, with support from customer service professionals in the office, it’s our goal to ensure that our systems deliver on the promise we made to our customers. We want our customers to experience warm, professional and speedy customer service. 

The O&M (Operations and Maintenance) Portfolio Manager is responsible for cultivating a strong customer facing culture, demonstrating excellent communication skills with customers and organizational skills with the team. The O&M Portfolio Manager will be responsible for developing and maintaining monitoring and maintenance contract obligations for individual and fleet customers.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide cost estimates and written proposals for monitoring, maintenance, and performance guarantee plans for ST (solar thermal) and PV (photovoltaic) systems 
  • Maintain records of system statuses for fleet reports 
  • Differentiate warranty, service, and O&M obligations for customers 
  • Write and send contracts for customers including quotes, work orders, and O&M agreements Managing invoicing for customers 
  • Schedule fleet maintenance obligations based on contractual timeline 
  • Review maintenance reports, revise, reformat when necessary 
  • Lead regular meetings with Portfolio customers and deliver updated reports
  • Make strategic business decisions to maintain customer relationships 
  • Order replacement equipment, track and reschedule techs 
  • Maintain partner relationships for fleet maintenance 
  • Build technical expertise through outside training and internal resources 
  • Evaluate departmental processes and revise when necessary in order to streamline customer experience. 

Key Experiences: 

We prefer leaders with solar industry experience including: 

  • An understanding of the key vulnerabilities to reliable performance of a solar power or solar thermal system. 
  • Good technical understanding of PV and ST (solar thermal) basics: how to build them and the standards that regulate them, such as the National Electrical Code. 
  • A strong understanding of various monitoring & controller products on the market, how to troubleshoot them and design reports that customers can easily understand. 

Qualifications: 

  • Good customer management skills 
  • Strong time management and organizational skills 
  • Excellent communications skills – both verbal and written 
  • Experience reading and understanding contracts 
  • Ability to act independently to make appropriate business decisions 
  • Strong typing/10-key skill desirable 
  • Experience in construction accounting or experience working directly with the accounting department in a construction related capacity preferred 
  • Experience with labor compliance or contract compliance would be desirable Solar PM, build experience desirable

PV Installer I/II

Position Description: 

At Sun Light and Power, experienced PV installers have the opportunity to both learn and teach. On a  daily basis, you’ll be partnered with senior team members in order to quickly experience a variety of  training and leadership styles as well as learn new techniques on the job. Once trained on our best  practices, you’ll then be relied upon to guide our entry level crew members by showing them the “Sun  Light & Power” way. 

The candidate we hire has decided to work in solar construction long-term. She or he will excel at the  technical aspects on her/his work and will always be on the lookout for ways to improve our installation  processes. They’ll have a strong understanding of electricity, solar, and how the systems work even if  they’ve not yet worked at commercial scale. She/he will be physically strong, comfortable working at  heights, and have a solid understanding of the electric and hand tools used in a solar PV installation  environment. Additionally, they’ll be an avid learner: someone who is willing and able to study for  her/his NABCEP (American Board of Certified Energy Professionals) certification in order to be promoted  into future leadership roles. 

The best Installers are naturally curious. They enjoy figuring things out, take pride in tiny details of their  work, and appreciate being part of a team and company that places safety first. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Build commercial solar electric/PV (photovoltaics) systems throughout the greater Bay Area Assist Crew Leader and/or Foreperson with mounting system installations
  • Install PV Modules (includes staging, prepping, securing module wiring, fastening, grounding,  aligning modules aesthetically, etc.) 
  • Safely operate power tools and hand-tools, (i.e. drills, tape measure, circular saw, reciprocating  saw, portable band saw) 
  • Learn the basic components of a commercial PV system and become able to accurately name all  of the parts/materials. 
  • Complete work in a timely, accurate manner and complete time sheet reflecting details of the  day 
  • Ensure the work site is clean; clear site of clutter and other hazards. Maintain clean and neat  tools and work space 
  • Work with basic materials; e.g. stanchions, racking equipment, modules 
  • Follow instructions and ask questions when not clear on what is expected 
  • Participate in monthly and weekly safety meetings 
  • Alert supervisors to any potential safety hazards and follow the Job Site Safety Plan Daily use of computer of cell phone for time recording and email communication New Installers  are expected to quickly learn the following on the job 
  • Acquire knowledge of construction safety and electrical safety standards 
  • Know how to work within a wire pulling team: how to handle wire, how not to stress stranded  wire 

Qualifications: 

  • For the Installer I position, we require some experience with electrical, construction or HVAC. For the Installer II position, we require 2+ years of experience as a PV Installer, preferably in a  commercial scale 
  • Reliable transportation to go to job sites is a must 
  • The ability to name, identify and use basic power tools and hardware 
  • Understanding the basics of electrical wiring 
  • Know the basic wire colors per the National Electrical Code (NEC) 
  • Understand the voltage issues involved with strings of modules (parallel vs. series) Have basic knowledge of DC electrical systems, preferably some AC as well 
  • Must be able to climb ladders and be comfortable working at extreme heights Able to lift at least 50 pounds throughout the day and on a daily basis and pass a physical exam  if needed 
  • Able and willing to work in extreme environments (in the rain, hot sun, crawl spaces and attics) Have experience with and proven knowledge of basic arithmetic, fractions, and geometry (must  be able to use a tape measure, effectively calculate measurements, etc.) 
  • Familiarity with the warehouse environment and stocking practices 
  • Be proactive: know in advance what you’ll do once the current task is completed. We call this  having a “What’s Next?” attitude 
  • Can use a computer for email and time cards at the very least 
  • Strong work ethic, attentive, ready to learn, and committed to quality work Lives a green lifestyle: daily practices reducing, reusing and recycling

PV Crew Lead

Position Description: 

At Sun Light & Power, the PV Crew Lead is the second person in command on any job site. She or he supports the Foreperson while acting as trainer, trouble-shooter and mentor to a crew of two. 

The best Crew Leaders in the industry possess a keen understanding of timing: knowing exactly when and who to call for assistance if a Foreperson or other senior leader is absent from the job site. They also have a sincere appreciation for electrical safety and often hold a professional certification such as OSHA 10, OSHA-30, and/or NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Professionals). 

The employees we retain typically have several years of experience installing solar, ideally including commercial scale PV and residential work. She or he is well acquainted with the tools of our trade and may own a good number of tools themselves. Once ably up to speed, they are often trusted with special projects and run short-duration jobs on their own. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Ensuring every project meets or exceeds the client’s expectations.
  • Maintaining a rapport with all the team members, demonstrating leadership abilities and good judgment.
  • Implementing and monitoring the Safety Plan for the project and ensuring all subcontractors comply with the Safety Plan.
  • Completing projects on time, within budget, and with minimal follow-up (punch list). Optimizing the profitability of the company through field planning and efficiency yet without jeopardizing the quality, safety or timely completion of the project.
  • Walking through projects with client and Project Manager for punch list. Monitoring and complete outstanding issues: company punch list then client punch list.
  • Reviewing BOM (bill of materials) and verifying correct materials are available in time to maintain work flow.
  • Performing site walks and pre-construction evaluation.
  • Coordinate deliveries, handling, storage and placement of materials on the jobsite. Reviewing and analyzing of Cost Report Information.
  • Review and approve Foreperson hours weekly.
  • Responsible, with the Project Manager, for project conformance with the agreement and Contract Documents (plans, specifications, clarifications, etc.)
  • Prepare and manage cloud based (G-Drive) project folder for all assigned jobs, which will include current plans, contract docs., and photos.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Strong management, leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Experience managing teams to meet deadlines on time and on budget
  • Proven experience managing work sites and crew members including providing appropriate action and coaching to improve behavior and/or performance
  • Knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems and National Electric Code
  • Ability to commission PV systems and troubleshoot common problems (i.e. ground faults, polarity)
  • Basic carpentry skills
  • Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to prioritize work assignments Computer skills and a familiarity with Microsoft office suite programs
  • Ability to work in extreme environments (hot sun, light rain, crawl spaces or attics, steep roofs in a harness)
  • Current CA driver license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to lift at least 75 pounds; comfortable climbing ladders and working at unusual heights Previous experience teaching Installers the basic practices of PV

The Director of System Performance is responsible for cultivating a strong customer facing culture,  demonstrating excellent communication skills with customers and technical skills with the team. Since  this role is evolving, the Director will also be responsible for developing a system, procedures to create  the most efficient and effective way of identifying underperforming systems, and fixing them quickly and  effectively, as well as addressing customers who call in with concerns about their systems.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Design a “System” (series of key processes) from customer’s perspective which reflect the customer experience from request to receiving product 
  • Establish metrics for the Customer Performance System 
  • Manage & report metrics for the Customer Performance System 
  • Establish and refine a business model to generate revenue by serving the customer’s needs, accept / confirm project commissioning, manage warranty liability and support sales of new projects. 
  • Manage a group budget and a financial plan that supports the SLP annual Operating Plan and our 3-year vision.
  • Test & improve processes and procedures to streamline the customer experience Plan, do, check (celebrate) & adjust continuously key processes & procedures. Support our PV and ST Performance Technicians in doing their best work 
  • Contribute to team culture by motivating individuals and building teams 
  • Design and implement a training program for performance technicians 
  • Manage and develop our Performance Technicians
