Associate Civil Engineer, Journey | SMUD | Pollock Pines, CA

SMUD’s Power Generation hydro maintenance engineering group is seeking an experienced journey-level civil engineer interested in supporting the ongoing maintenance of, and upgrades to civil structures within the hydropower system. The ideal candidate is a good communicator, is comfortable managing projects in the field and likes to be hands on in support of skilled craft workers on construction projects.

This position will report to “Fresh Pond”, a maintenance facility near Pollock Pines, California.  This office performs most of the maintenance and construction required for the upkeep of 19 dams, 9 powerhouses, interconnecting tunnels, penstocks and support structures.

Note: This position is a good fit for an engineer seeking to work closely with field crews and become an expert on SMUD’s hydroelectric system.  We recognize the commitment required to travel into the Upper American River Project’s (UARPs) facilities on a daily basis, and offer rideshare vans to reduce commuting costs.  This position is eligible for a 4/10 (four days, 10 hours per day) schedule, and other schedules are available.  This position is not on a hybrid schedule, but working from home can be accommodated on an intermittent basis as maintenance requirements permit.  SMUD takes pride in powering the Sacramento region where we live and work.

Purpose

Under general supervision, performs minor to moderately complex civil design and inspection tasks for new construction, modification, and maintenance of SMUD’s various assets.  This includes civil work associated with power generating units and supporting infrastructure assets, transmission and distribution substations, transmission lines, distribution lines, and stationary facilities. This position will also prepare Design Change Notice (DCN) packages in support of these assets. This position will deal with a wide range of civil engineering work.

Nature and Scope

This is the journey level (J) within the Civil Engineer class series. Positions within this classification will demonstrate working knowledge within their functional area independently with minimal oversight. Under general supervision, positions within this class perform difficult and more complex work than the entry level (E) Civil Engineer as defined by management. This class is distinguished from the Sr. Civil Engineer in that the latter requires a higher level of complexity, difficulty and level of tasks assigned, broader decision-making authority, and advanced technical knowledge. Advancement to the Sr. Civil Engineer is done through a formal hiring process.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs minor to moderately complex engineering design on civil/structural SMUD assets.
  • Prepares Design Change Notification (DCN) packages for construction and other field work; interprets DCN packages and associated documents; utilizes a document control system to manage the development and revision of drawings and maps; produces as-built drawings from field data.
  • Supports field crews and contractors to ensure designs are implemented in construction; assists during the transition of projects from design and construction to operations by preparing schedules and developing project test and acceptance criteria ad hoc reports; produces reports from field data collection in support of regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Assists in developing related bid package specifications necessary for bidding and procurement of materials and services related to assigned civil/structural projects; for less complex projects, may assume primary responsibility for coordinating with supply chain services department on procurement of services and materials necessary to complete projects.
  • Performs a broad range of drafting and graphic assignments utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create and revise drawings and maps associated with engineering design changes and new engineering designs on various SMUD assets.
  • Performs field investigations to take measurements and collect data for assigned projects; verifies existing configurations and conditions against documentation; produces as-built drawings from field visits and measurements; conducts on-site visits to verify proper facility installations by contractors or SMUD personnel and to ensure conformity with applicable codes and design requirements; conducts site visits and inspections with contractors and other outside personnel.
  • May be assigned primary design and coordination role for SMUD projects with lower levels of design and construction/installation complexity; uses basic project management skills to function as the primary contact from job initiation to job completion, coordinating communication with outside agencies, and consulting with field crews and contractors during the course of the project.
  • Performs other related duties as needed to include working outside of typical business hours when necessary.
