Description: The Public Affairs Assistant Coordinator will support the Policy and Public Affairs Team in four key focus areas: 1) Press & media relations, 2) Policy development, implementation, and tracking, 3) Intern recruitment & placement, and 4) Public affairs & community relations.

What You’ll Likely Do
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

Press & Media Relations:
• Work closely with Policy and Public Affairs Team to support reactive and proactive media outreach.
• Oversee the Department’s media monitoring service and media subscriptions (e.g. SF Chronicle, etc):
· Track media featuring the Department or key topic areas important to the Department.
· Collate and send news clips daily.
· Curate and update Department’s media contacts and distribution lists and send press releases out.
• Assist in planning press conferences including set-up, logistics, and take-down.
• Assist, as needed, with triaging, tracking and scheduling media interviews (reactive and proactive).

• Support the Policy and Public Affairs Team and other program staff to develop and draft public policy for introduction at the Board of Supervisors or State Legislature.
• Interface with internal and external stakeholders to receive input on potential new legislation.
• Collate and assemble legislative documents to satisfy Board of Supervisors, state and federal requirements.
• Track local, state and federal legislation using internal tracking systems.
• Provide support with ongoing/routine legislative items, such as grant awards, the Department’s annual budget, Board of Supervisor committee hearings, presentations, etc.
• Respond to Board of Supervisor or other constituent service requests.

• Recruit interns through existing pathways and contacts and assist Policy and Public Affairs Team with orientation and placement throughout the Department.
• Assist Policy and Public Affairs Team with the development of new intern recruitment pathways to broaden the pool of available interns.
• Facilitate the development of how-to-guides and other materials for both interns and program staff.
• Coordinate intern volunteer opportunities at Department-sponsored or Department-staffed events.

Public Affairs:
• Attend monthly event planning meeting when needed and represent the Department at relevant events.
• Assist in preparation, scheduling, and facilitation for tours and international delegations.
• Support planning and execution for Earth Month activities and other major Department events.
• Represent the Department at designated functions.
