In the US, it is estimated that 30 to 40% of our food supply is wasted. That’s tens of billions of tons of perfectly good food heading to our landfills every year! In fact, according to the USDA food waste is the single largest component going to municipal landfills. Once there, instead of biodegrading it generates methane, helping to make landfills the third largest source of methane in the US. But food waste isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a humanitarian one as well with 40 million people in the US alone struggling with hunger.

How is it possible that we waste so much food? What are the issues we face in today’s food supply chain that contribute to waste and what solutions do we have to combat them? What are the obstacles to keeping food out of the landfills and getting it into the hands of those who need it?
